What Is an AI Agent? Clear Definition With Real Examples

You may have thought: "Another new buzzword." Honestly, I get it.

A few months ago, everyone was talking about RAG — the AI that was supposedly going to revolutionize everything and replace entire workforces with knowledge bases. Now it's AI agents, presented as the inevitable next step.

In reality, this is yet another AI technology, and there's a push to convince you that you absolutely need it. For the record, I get along perfectly well without an AI agent that makes my coffee, cooks my meals, and tidies my apartment. But — and there's always a but — these AI agents genuinely solve real problems and address real business needs.

So, what exactly is an AI agent? What does agentic AI actually mean? To understand that, you first need to understand what ChatGPT is — and more importantly, what its limitations are. Because AI agents exist to address (or work around) the limitations of language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.


ChatGPT: a language model and its limits

I'll keep this simple.

Behind ChatGPT is a language model — an AI trained on billions of data points to answer questions. When it responds, it does exactly one thing: generate text. It's worth understanding that this is just one type of AI among many: there are also models for images, time series, tabular data, and audio. A lot of people still conflate AI with ChatGPT.

In other words: a language model, by definition, only predicts the next word.

If you use ChatGPT every day, you're probably thinking: "What is he talking about? ChatGPT generates images, searches the web, analyzes documents…"

And you're right. But there's an important distinction to make: ChatGPT today is no longer just a language model. It's a full application with many components layered on top.

Let's rewind for a moment.

Assume for now that ChatGPT can:

  • not search the internet
  • not create images
  • not access your files

And can only generate text.

That takes us back to ChatGPT at the end of 2022.

Back then, people were already dreaming of an AI that could:

  • search the web
  • look through documents
  • reply to emails
  • chain several actions on its own

And quickly a question emerged: how do you build an AI capable of doing all of this at once?

Training a single AI to do everything isn't really viable. And more importantly, that's not how AI works.


Language models can plan and execute tasks step by step

Over time, something very interesting became clear: language models are capable of reasoning, planning, and breaking a task down into individual steps.

For example, if I ask:

"Buy the ingredients for a chocolate cake."

The model can work out:

  • Find a chocolate cake recipe
  • Extract the ingredient list
  • Prepare a shopping list
  • Find a store
  • Order online or plan a route

The language model can do all of this… in its head.

The problem is that it can't do anything in the real world.

But now imagine that at each step, we give it access to a specific tool:

  • A tool to search the internet
  • A tool to place an order
  • A tool to send an email
  • A tool to interact with a database

These tools are provided by us, the developers. And since 2025, there's even an open standard for exposing these tools to any AI agent: the MCP protocol (Model Context Protocol), which is becoming the market standard.

Before going further, this part matters.

To let the model search the internet, for example, we simply teach it to express its intent. It will output something like:

search_web("chocolate cake recipe")

As soon as that instruction appears:

  1. The program launches the search
  2. Retrieves the results
  3. Sends them back to the language model

All of this is automated with code.

And from that moment on, we're no longer talking about a simple language model.

We've just built an AI agent.


Concretely: what is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a language model that has been given:

  • a list of tools
  • the ability to use them
  • and permission to keep going as many times as necessary

The goal is simple: it doesn't stop until the task is truly finished.

In practice, the language model doesn't "run" continuously. Again, it's the developer who orchestrates everything: they restart the model, feed it the tool responses, and keep the loop going.

As long as the model doesn't output something like "Done", the loop continues.

There's often confusion around the term.

A real AI agent is autonomous:

  • it chooses which tools to use
  • it decides when to retry
  • it switches strategy if something isn't working
  • it decides on its own when to stop

This is not just a sequence of pre-written steps. The language model drives everything.


Example: booking a restaurant for a group of friends

Imagine you ask a restaurant-booking agent:

"Book a table at an Italian restaurant for 5 people this Saturday evening, somewhere close by."

Here's what happens, step by step:

1. First step The agent decides to search for Italian restaurants open Saturday evening nearby:

search_restaurants("italian", "nearby", "saturday evening")

2. Execute and respond The program fetches the results and sends them back to the agent.

3. New decision The agent analyses the list and checks availability:

check_availability("Restaurant Bella Roma", "saturday 8pm", 5)

4. The loop continues If that slot isn't available, it tries the next restaurant.

5. Final step Once a table is found:

book_table("chosen restaurant", "saturday 8pm", 5)

6. End of loop The agent calls no more tools and replies:

"Booking confirmed at Restaurant Bella Roma, Saturday at 8pm for 5 people."


AI agents: what you see as a user

From your side, all of this machinery is invisible.

You ask a question. A few seconds later, you have a final answer.

You don't see:

  • the number of steps taken
  • the failed attempts
  • the intermediate searches

And that's exactly the point.

AI agents aren't built to impress users technically. They're built to take on a mission and see it through to completion.

From your perspective, it just feels like a very smart assistant that understands what you want and only comes back when it's genuinely done.


Why are AI agents getting so much attention right now?

AI agents aren't an entirely new idea. What's new is that language models are finally good enough for them to actually work.

They can now:

  • reason across multiple steps
  • correct their own mistakes
  • adapt when a strategy isn't working

Add to that:

  • APIs everywhere
  • tools that are easy to connect
  • increasingly controlled costs

And above all, very concrete needs on the business side.

That's why everyone is talking about them now.


The limitations (because yes, there are some)

An AI agent is still an AI.

It can:

  • make mistakes
  • misinterpret a situation
  • use the wrong tool

That's why in practice, guardrails are always put in place:

  • access restrictions
  • human validation
  • maximum action budgets
  • logs and controls

AI agents are powerful, but they don't replace human judgment. Not yet, anyway.

And beyond guardrails, two components make the real difference between an agent that works in a demo and one that works in production: long-term memory (so it remembers user preferences and facts) and choosing the right framework (CrewAI, LangGraph, Pydantic AI, Smolagents — they don't serve the same audiences or have the same strengths at all).


AI agents and RAG: two complementary approaches

If you've already heard of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), you're probably wondering what the difference — or the relationship — is with AI agents.

The short answer: RAG is a building block. An agent is the assembly.

An AI agent can perfectly well use a RAG as one of its tools: it searches documents, then sends an email, then updates a database. This combination produces the most powerful systems — what's called Agentic RAG, as opposed to classic linear RAG.

In practice, here are two concrete examples where this combination has made a real difference:

  • Construction: an agent coupled with a multi-source RAG can automate the drafting of tender responses — standards, project history, and winning examples retrieved in seconds instead of hours of manual research.
  • Insurance: the same logic applied to claims reports cut 80% of processing time per file.

To wrap up

AI agents are neither magical nor indispensable for everyone.

They are, above all, well-orchestrated language models, capable of reasoning, acting, and retrying until an objective is reached.

For the user, it's simple. For the developer, it's far more complex.

And that's probably the real evolution of AI today: not an AI that talks better, but an AI that actually does things.


FAQ: Frequently asked questions about AI agents

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot? A chatbot answers a question and stops there. An AI agent autonomously chains multiple actions to complete a full objective: searching for information, calling APIs, making decisions, sending emails. The difference is between an advisor who answers and an assistant who sees a mission through.

Can an AI agent make mistakes? Yes. An AI agent can misinterpret an instruction, use the wrong tool, or make a bad decision. That's why guardrails are always put in place: human validation on critical actions, access restrictions, maximum action budgets, and full audit logs.

What frameworks should I use to build an AI agent? The most widely used frameworks are LangGraph (structured stateful agents), CrewAI (multi-agent systems), and AutoGen (conversational agents). For simple use cases, the native Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI API with tool use is enough without any framework.

How long does it take to deploy an AI agent in a business? A POC on a targeted use case can be done in 2 to 4 weeks. Production deployment with testing, integration into existing systems, and team training generally takes 2 to 3 months. Complexity depends mainly on the number of tools to connect and the security requirements.
